Proper Sump Pump Discharge

The Engineering Department would like to remind residents that due to cold weather conditions after rain and wet conditions, the sump pump piping must be properly discharged.

The Township understands that using sump pumps is necessary during heavy rains, however, if the sump pump discharges into the roadway, the Township may ask that your sump pump discharge be relocated from the roadway to avoid safety issues for traveling motorists.

It is acceptable if the discharge is just the shoulder of the roadway, also known as the gutter (usually the first 3 to 4 feet). The Township ordinance does not allow discharge to the street of any new construction. Older sump pump discharges have been “grandfathered” and are permitted to remain towards the street as long as they do not impact the traveled roadway. Ice located in the gutter of the road only is permitted.
