Township Committee Recognizes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

At the September 22nd meeting, the Township Committee recognized October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  The month-long initiative was first recognized in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence as a Day of Unity to connect battered women advocates across the country.

“The Township Committee encourages all to support victims and survivors and speak out against domestic violence,” said Mayor Doug Tomson.

Domestic violence affects millions, both women and men, of every race, religion, culture, and status. Domestic violence is not only physical abuse, it is also yelling, humiliation, stalking, manipulation, coercion, threats and isolation.  Nearly three out of four Americans personally know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence.

Safe+Sound Somerset is a local domestic violence resource whose services include a 24-hour call and text crisis hotline, emergency safe house, transitional housing, legal advocacy, individual and group counseling for adults and children, financial empowerment, volunteer Domestic Violence Response Teams, Family Advocacy, and SPEAK Community Outreach and Education.  In 2019, Safe+Sound Somerset provided 3,329 adult and children survivors with 4,821 counseling sessions, 1,749 legal advocacy sessions, 5,235 nights of refuge, meals and other necessities, responded to 2,422 calls and texts to the Hotline, and provided 251 outreach and violence prevention programs to 6,282 students and community members.
