"Hillsborough is now a 'Stigma-Free Community'. Here's what it means." - Courier News

HILLSBOROUGH – To promote the importance of mental health, the township has become a "Stigma-Free Community."

At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has generated excessive stress in everyday lives, especially during the holiday season. the goal of the Stigma-Free campaign, an initiative of the Somerset County Department of Human Services, is to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and create an environment where people feel free to seek support without fear of being stigmatized.

Both the township committee and the board of education have endorsed the campaign.

Superintendent of Schools Lisa Antunes welcomed the partnership with the township.

“For many years we have remained steadfast in our focus on students’ long-term development by promoting social and emotional learning including recognizing and managing emotions, building relationships, problem solving and effective decision making,” Antunes said. “It is important for the district to continue to work with the township and the community on this important initiative of Stigma-Free in Hillsborough and we look forward to doing so.”
