HTPD Advises Against Fraud

Recently there has been a rise in the number of frauds reported to the police department. There are new and innovative scams that are appearing every day. To help keep you from becoming a victim we have listed some helpful tips to safeguard your finances.
      
  • Never give out your bank account information to an unknown caller, including credit card numbers.
  • The Hillsborough Police Department and Chief McMahon do not solicit donations by Phone.
  • Gift cards of any kind are valueless once the activation code is shared.
  • A reputable company or government agency would not require a payment through a gift card.
  • Don’t give an unknown caller access codes to your computer. He does not work for Microsoft. 
  • The misuse of the English language through emails or verbal communication could be a red flag.
  • Be aware of any opportunity where you are required to pay a small sum now for a larger future prize.
  • Unknown callers requesting large sums of immediate cash should raise concern.
  • Is a loved one arrested or involved in an accident and a stranger is requesting money? This is most likely a fraud. Verify this request through a second party: police, loved one.
  • Be aware of false website links sent through fraudulent emails. Examine the address of the sender to verify it is correct.
