Recently there has been a rise in the number of frauds reported to the police department. There are new and innovative scams that are appearing every day. To help keep you from becoming a victim we have listed some helpful tips to safeguard your finances.

Never give out your bank account information to an unknown caller, including credit card numbers.
The Hillsborough Police Department and Chief McMahon do not solicit donations by Phone.
Gift cards of any kind are valueless once the activation code is shared.
A reputable company or government agency would not require a payment through a gift card.
Don’t give an unknown caller access codes to your computer. He does not work for Microsoft.
The misuse of the English language through emails or verbal communication could be a red flag.
Be aware of any opportunity where you are required to pay a small sum now for a larger future prize.
Unknown callers requesting large sums of immediate cash should raise concern.
Is a loved one arrested or involved in an accident and a stranger is requesting money? This is most likely a fraud. Verify this request through a second party: police, loved one.
Be aware of false website links sent through fraudulent emails. Examine the address of the sender to verify it is correct.
