It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Leaf Season

With shorter days and colder weather upon us, the Hillsborough Township Department of Public Works is gearing up to kick off the fall leaf program.  The purpose of the leaf program is to assist residents with the removal of fallen leaves.  The program starts in November and continues through mid-December, or until there has been two passes throughout the town. It takes approximately 3-4 weeks to complete one pass through the entire town.

To participate in the leaf collection program, residents must rake leaves to the curb or street right-of-way before the beginning of their scheduled week of collection. A tentative schedule will be posted in the Mayor's e-news and on the Township website.  Please keep in mind this is a tentative schedule and is subject to change with weather conditions, equipment breakage, and manpower.

Bagged leaves are not accepted and will not be collected. Homemade collection bins with stakes and wire fences help keep leaves contained and are encouraged to help residents get their leaves out early and contain them from blowing around.  Bins should not be taller than 36 inches and should be located near the curb or ditch line.

Residents should keep leaves away from gutters, drainpipes, drop inlets, drainage structures, and catch basins, as to not block the free flow of water.  Rocks, sticks, brush, and other objects must be kept out of leaf piles, as they can damage equipment and delay the program.  No attempt will be made to collect leaf piles that contain damaging items.

Please note leaves should not block traffic, nor should they be piled near intersection corners which causes sight issues for motorists/bicyclists and pedestrians.  In addition, Ordinance #2005-42: Yard Waste in Roadway has penalties that include fines up to $1250.

Residents who miss leaf collection and prefer to take their leaves to the Auten Road facility may do so on select Saturdays from 7 am - 3 pm.  The schedule is as follows: November 6th, 13th, 19th (11 am-3 pm), 20th, 27th; December 4th, 11th, 17th (11 am - 3 pm), 18th. Proof of residency is required. Only leaves will be accepted. No brush, yard waste, or debris.  Bagged leaves should be dumped and bags should be taken with you.

More information on both the leaf pick-up and drop-off programs can be found on the Township website under Public Works or by calling 908-369-4313, prompt 6.
