Hillsborough Girl Scout Troop 60126 Silver Award Projects Benefit C.A.N. Food Pantry

The Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve, gives girls in grades 6-8 the chance to demonstrate their leadership skills. The goal is to identify a problem in their community and organize a project to address it.

In response to New Jersey’s ban on some businesses' use of single-use plastic bags, polystyrene food containers, plastic straws, and paper bags beginning May 4, 2022, Cadettes Isabella and Laura created their Silver Award project, “Pop the Plastic Problem”.  They held a workshop for younger Girl Scouts to teach them about how plastic harms the earth.  They also made reusable bags from t-shirts and donated them to the Hillsborough Community Assistance Network (C.A.N.) Food Pantry.

Silver Award candidates Sarah, Sophie, Carly, and Amanda decided to help make sure every Hillsborough C.A.N. food pantry pet owner has the supplies necessary to take care of their pet without sacrificing their own needs. They held collections at local pet stores to gather donations of food, toys, and treats. The girls met with staff from the Hillsborough Township Community Assistance Network (C.A.N.) Food Pantry to research the project; learn about the community that is served, and their needs, and determine space requirements and storage options. They met all of the requirements with the bin they provided.  It stores food safely and could easily be rolled out for clients.  The Cadettes continue to check stock levels to help sustain their project.
