Now that spring is here, more people are using their backyard fire pits and chimineas. The Fire Safety Bureau would like to share some guidelines for anyone wishing to enjoy a backyard fire this season.
- Do not start a fire during high wind conditions
- All wood burning devices must be equipped with either a chimney or spark screen
- The fire area must be located on a non-combustible surface such as a brick or concrete patio
- Burning leaves, trash, and debris is not permitted
- Never use a flammable liquid to start a fire
- Cool ashes for at least 24 hours prior to removal. Keep ashes in a metal waste can with a tight-fitting lid and keep it away from the house.
- Keep your neighbors in mind when burning outdoors. Smoke and other products of combustion can have an impact on surrounding yards and be drawn into neighboring houses.
