Hillsborough Announces Fishing Derby Winners

70 Young Anglers Competed in the Annual Event

The pond at Ann Van Middlesworth Park was stocked with small and large mouthed bass, sunfish and channel catfish last Friday, August 5th, as young anglers lined up at 5:00 p.m. to compete in Hillsborough Township’s annual fishing derby. Undeterred by the darkening skies and threat of rain, participants competed to win coveted prizes and well-earned bragging rights.

The bait of choice for most competitors was worms, though a few entrants tempted fish with hot dogs. However, it was the worms that prevailed in the end, as evidenced by the top finishers. Coming in first place, with a bass weighing 12.2 ounces, was 8-year-old Angel Nikitczuk. Mayor Shawl Lipani presented Angel with a First Place certificate and Spinning Wheel Fishing Combo.

Mayor Lipani also presented 7-year-old Varick Kapor with a Second Place Certificate and Fishing Starter Kit for his 6.4 ounce bass, while Anthony and Grayson  Persaud, ages 5 and 3, took home the Third Place prize, a Zebco Combination push-button fishing rod, after they teamed up to catch a 4.8 ounce sunfish.

“This is a fun and popular community event and we are proud to bring it to the Hillsborough community every year,” commented Mayor Shawn Lipani.
