Proper Recycling

The single most important issue with recycling is avoiding contamination.  Contamination is anything that goes into a recycling container that cannot be recycled.  Things such as garbage, plastic items that cannot be recycled, plastic bags, etc, are all examples of contamination.  If too much contamination is found in recycling on collection day, the entire load, including recyclable material, must be sent to a landfill as it is too expensive to sort through what is and is not recyclable.  While it should be everyone's goal to recycle as many items as possible, the phrase we need to remember is “When in doubt, throw it out”. It may seem counterproductive that we suggest throwing something that may be recyclable into the garbage, but it is far better to be safe and dispose of it in the trash until you find out for sure if the item is recyclable in the curbside container.
