*You will be required to choose two references. Please advise your references that the FARS system will email them questions to be answered.
- Hillsborough Township Police Department's ORI number is
*Using an incorrect ORI number will result in an invalid application making it necessary to re-apply and repay the application fee. A refund will not be issued.
- Once the application is complete and your fees are submitted the Hillsborough Township Police Department will conduct a background check.
*You will receive automated updates throughout the background process, including when the application has been approved.
- Initial applicants are required to have their fingerprints taken. This process is the responsibility of the applicant using a private company named Identogo.
*The Hillsborough Township Police Department will not fingerprint any applicants.
- Required nonrefundable fees associated with your application and registration request:
- Application fee payable to NJSP $21.00. Does not apply to first time applicant.
- Initial Firearms Identification Card payable to Hillsborough Twp $50.00.
- Permit(s)to purchase a handgun payable to Hillsborough Twp $25.00
*1 permit = $25.00 / 3 permits = $75.00 I 6 permits = $150.00
**Permits to purchase a handgun are valid for 90 days from the date of issue. A 90-day extension is automatically applied to the permit. After 180 days, the permit is invalid.

The preferred method of payment is by credit card by using this link: https://www.sdlportal.com/towns/nj/somerset/hillsboroughtwp/forms. You may also pay by Money order in person at the Hillsborough Township Police Department on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. We will not accept cash, checks or credit card payments at police headquarters.
Effective immediately we will be complying with the recommended procedure as set forth by the New Jersey State Police which requires payment for Firearms Identification Cards and Permits to Purchase Handguns prior to starting the investigation process.
