Updates From the Health Department

Tick Warning

Warmer weather means that we are spending more time outdoors and in contact with nature. You don't want to be in contact with tickborne illnesses from tick bites. Please check the Health Department site on the Hillsborough website to see how to prevent tick bites, how to remove ticks, and how to identify them.

Wildlife is Active

Wildlife is also active at this time of year. Please make sure to call the animal control line at 908-722-1271 to ask questions about wildlife that might be taking up residence on your property or is behaving unusually. Some animals carry rabies, which is a fatal disease caused by the rabies virus. To protect your pets, please make sure they are currently vaccinated against rabies, and that dogs are licensed in 2023. Even if your pet is vaccinated, if it has contact with a rabid animal, please contact your vet for a booster vaccine, and report any contact of people or pets with another animal to the police department. If you are bitten by a dog, it is important to get the owner's information- name, address, and phone number. The police and the health department will get the dog's vaccination records, and make sure the dog is observed for 10 days to be sure it cannot transmit rabies. Please check out the rabies information on the health department website.
