Conservation/Drainage Easements
Residents are reminded that drainage easements on your property are to allow water flow. Sometimes, the easement is due to a flood zone or wetlands and the area is to remain undisturbed. A drainage easement should never be blocked by fences, structures, or yard debris to permit adequate drainage.
Many times, a conservation easement is created to protect the area. This is to remind property owners that the area should be left in its natural state and be completely undisturbed. Trees should not be cut down in these areas. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has jurisdiction over conservation easements and residents can receive a violation from the NJDEP if they disturb this area that is within wetlands or flood zones. Please check your survey or contact the Engineering Department to determine if you have a drainage or conservation easement on your property.
