Backyard Firepit Safety Tips

Now that spring is here, more people are using their backyard fire pits and chimineas. The Fire Safety Bureau would like to share some guidelines for anyone wishing to enjoy a backyard fire this season.

  • Do not start a fire during high wind conditions
  • All wood burning devices must be equipped with either a chimney or spark screen
  • The fire area must be located on a non-combustible surface such as a brick or concrete patio
  • Burning leaves, trash, and debris is not permitted
  • Never use a flammable liquid to start a fire
  • Cool ashes for at least 24 hours prior to removal. Keep ashes in a metal waste can with a tight-fitting lid and keep it away from the house.
  • Keep your neighbors in mind when burning outdoors. Smoke and other products of combustion can have an impact on surrounding yards and be drawn into neighboring houses.
