How Wastewater Monitoring Works
The Wastewater Viral Activity Level is the number of standard deviations above the baseline, transformed to the linear scale. Less than 1.5 is categorized as minimal, greater than 1.5 and up to 3 is low, greater than 3 and up to 4.5 is moderate, greater than 4.5 and up to 8 is high, and greater than 8 is very high.
Data from Bridgewater, NJ (Somerset Raritan Valley Sewerage Authority) - Includes data for other pathogens such as RSV and norovirus. COVID-19 data may be less accurate due to lack of aggregation and data analysis.
Important notes: On the Wastewater Trends graph above, data from the last two weeks (in gray) may be incomplete due to delays in data reporting. Wastewater data may not accurately reflect the level of COVID-19 in the community. For example, most jurisdictions report data from sewer systems and not septic systems, which may over-represent urban and suburban populations.
